How can Pain Help you Find Your Problem?
Your pain is important and is a WARNING light that there is a problem somewhere in the body, however it is often not the problem itself. Although you may experience feelings that are uncomfortable and at times unbearable, is not necessarily the problem site.
An analogy that I use for pain is this: Pain is similar to a warning light that comes up on the car dashboard. It lets you know that something is not right however the light itself is not broken. It would be a disservice to you if we only looked at the site of pain and then made it go away. It would be the same as replacing the light bulb for the dashboard light.
As physiotherapists we need to look at your entire system; how your muscles move, how your joints move and how your nerves move; in order to have an understanding of what is contributing to your problem. This thorough assessment is the equivalent as your mechanic checking your entire vehicle for a problem. Once we find the underlying cause of the discomfort we can work on getting the best results in the shortest amount of time.
What to Do Next?
It is not the norm to have pain in your day to day activities. So if you do, listen to your body as it is trying to tell you that something is not right. The sooner you have an assessment the sooner you can start managing the problem and the sooner you will feel and move better.
